KIMBERLEY TOUR ITINERARY – DARWIN TO BROOME
14 AUGUST 2024 – 24 AUGUST 2024
Day 1: AUCKLAND/WELLINGTON/CHRISTCHURCH TO DARWIN VIA SYDNEY: For those that have included flights in the tour package, the group will assemble in Sydney after connecting flights from New Zealand on 14 August 2024. The group will depart the same day on a Qantas flight to Darwin arriving 12:40 am. You will be met by your tour guide on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Stay 2-nights at a centrally located Darwin City Hotel with breakfast included.
Day 2: DARWIN: Late morning your driver guide will pick up the group for local sightseeing and a visit to Darwin Museum & Art Gallery featuring some great exhibitions on the World War 11 bombings and cyclone Tracey in 1974 that forced a mass evacuation of the city. That evening board the 25-metre Tri-level Catamaran “Charles Darwin” for a group buffet dinner cruise on Darwin harbour. The buffet menu includes Australian oysters and prawns for starters and the dessert selection includes the Australian version of Pavlova!
Day 3: DARWIN – KATHERINE: Your last stop in the Northern Territory. Board your coach after breakfast for an enjoyable trip to Katherine with several sightseeing stops along the way. On arrival check into your hotel and reboard the coach for a short trip to Nitmiluk Gorge (Previously known as Katherine Gorge) where the group will take a 2-hour 2-gorge boat trip. (Some walking over well-formed paths between the two Gorges required) On this trip you will likely get to see the first of many freshwater crocodiles and maybe a salty, lots of other wildlife and some great scenery. Stay 1-night at Knotts crossing Resort with breakfast and dinner included.
Day 4: KATHERINE – KUNUNURRA: As we cross the border into Western Australia you lose 2-hours making what could be a long day a lot shorter!! Your first stop will likely be the Victoria River Roadhouse for morning tea (own Cost) and a comfort stop (No charge) before travelling through to Lake Argyle for a picnic lunch and a 50km boat trip down the Ord River (cost of boat trip and lunch included) Stay 2-nights at the Lilly Lagoon Resort with breakfast included both days.
Day 5: KUNUNURRA: An early start today for those taking the optional 2-hour Bungle Bungles scenic flight with fantastic views of Lake Argyle and the world heritage listed Purnululu National Park. For those not taking the flight your driver/guide will take you on a local sightseeing tour. In the afternoon for something different we visit the local rum distillery tastings, and a tour of the facilities.
Day 6: KUNUNRRA – HALLS CREEK: We leave Kununurra behind and begin out journey through some remote parts of Western Australia. We visit the historic port town of Wyndham and then travel to the Hidden Valley. Stay 1-night at the Kimberley Hotel Halls Creek with breakfast and dinner included.
Day 7: HALLS CREEK – FITZROY CROSSING: Experience some more great scenery as we travel through to Fitzroy River Lodge. After lunch we enter Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park for our final boat trip on the mighty Fitzroy River. Enjoy the panoramic views while Parks and Wildlife Service rangers take you on a guided journey through Geikie Gorge where you will learn about the stunning geology, wildlife, and cultural significance of this ancient gorge. You travel through part of an ancient limestone barrier reef which snakes across the west Kimberley. It was laid down in an ancient sea that covered a large part of the Kimberley in Devonian times, some 350 million years ago. Stay 1-night at the Fitzroy River Lodge with lunch & breakfast included. Diner is A La Carte at own cost.
Day 8: FITZROY CROSSING – BROOME: As we travel through to Broome, we enjoy some real backcountry scenery with a stop for lunch. (Own Cost) We end the day enjoying what should be a magnificent sunset with Fish and Chips on Cable Beach. (Own Cost) The more adventurous traveller can take an optional camel ride. Stay 2-nights at The Broome Time Resort with breakfasts included.
Day 9: BROOME: This morning board the coach for local sightseeing with your driver/guide. Your guide may include a visit to China Town, the Japanese Cemetery, jewellery, and pearl showrooms and Streeters Jetty, once used by peal luggers and merchants.
Farwell Dinner: This evening the group will be transported to the newly opened Spinflex brewery – restaurant for our farewell cost included evening dinner. What a great way to end what is without doubt a memorable holiday experience.
Day 10: BROOME – MELBOURNE : This afternoon we board our Flight to Melbourne as we say goodbye to Western Australia and start our journey home or on to other locations. If you have purchased the stopover deal you stay 1-night at the Mantra Melbourne Airport with breakfast and airport transfers included.
Day 11: SYDNEY – NEW ZEALAND: This morning the group will be transferred to Melbourne airport for return flights. You arrive back in New Zealand on 24 August 2024.
