ITINERARY LOS ANGELES TO CHICAGO
Day 1 – Los Angeles CA
If you are joining the group tour departing Auckland on 14 September 2024 you fly direct to Los Angeles on Air New Zealand arriving the same day. Clear customs and board the Airport transit bus which will take you directly to the rental centre to pick up your selected vehicle for your Route 66 adventure.
Overnight at an airport hotel –Parking is available at your central airport hotel.
Day 2- 4 Las Vegas NV
Lunch at Peggy Sues 50’s Diner – As you travel through Las Vegas stop off at Peggy Sues, a 1950s-style diner, with American classics such as meatloaf & chicken-fried steak on the menu.
Fremont Street Experience – Head Down Town for bands, street entertainers, zip line, and much more.
World Class Shows – Your tour notes tell you how to buy tickets to the best shows in Vegas, frequently at discounted prices.
Day 5 Kingman AZ
Visit Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West as you travel through to Kingman.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk – Optional is a U-shaped cantilever bridge that extends 70 feet out from the rim at Eagle Point.
Helicopter flights – Optional tour over the Grand Canyon and experience one of the seven natural wonders of the world from the air and water on this helicopter flight.
Day 6 Gallup NM
Old Route 66 Historic Hotel – Discover a unique Southwest Experience during the American West. The El Rancho Hotel is a pillar of the West and was the Home of the Movie Stars throughout the 1930s to 1940s who filmed Westerns in the area.
Day 7- 8 Santa Fee NM
Route 66 Guided Walking Tour – Time for a bit of R & R with a 2-day layover. Get out of the car and experience a guided walking tour of this historic New Mexico city. Who knows you might come across Billy the Kid who spent some time here washing dishes.
Day 9 Amarillo TX
Big Texan Steakhouse – Dine at The Big Texan in Amarillo get a 72oz steak eat it in under an hour and its free.
Day 10 Weatherford OK
Oklahoma Route 66 Museum Clinton – For the ultimate Route 66 experience look at the history, myths, signs, photos & music of the iconic road, plus a diner replica.
Day 11 – 12 Oklahoma City OK
National Cowboy Hall of Fame – Visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum with more than 28,000 Western and American Indian art works and artifacts allocate 3-6 hours minimum to see everything.
Day 13 Springfield MO
Meramec Caverns – Discover a 4.6-mile cavern system in the Ozarks, near Stanton, Missouri. The caverns were formed from the erosion of large limestone deposits over millions of years.
Will Rogers Centre Claremore – a 19,052-square-foot museum in Claremore, Oklahoma that celebrates entertainer Will Rogers. The museum houses artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, and manuscripts
Day 14 – 15 St Louis MO
The Gateway Arch – it is the world’s tallest arch 190-metre monument in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Take a tram ride to the top. Visit the museum and trace stories of Native Americans, explorers, pioneers, and rebels who made America possible.
Day 16 – 18 Chicago IL
Visit Pontiac Illinois – for the route 66 museum and classic cars.
Take the mobster tour – for a gangland experience
Navy Pier & Willis Tower – Just two of the many attractions on the included hop-off Chicago city tour
Day 19 – 21 Onward Travel
Cross the international dateline – Arrive New Zealand on day 21
